Energy and Climate Technologies

Sabancı Group strives for accessible and uninterrupted energy, leading the transformation towards a cleaner, carbon-free energy environment by investing in energy and climate technologies.

Renewable Energy Investments in Türkiye

Sabancı Group, through its leading private sector electricity producer in Türkiye, Enerjisa Üretim, has increased its market share to 4% of installed capacity in Türkiye and 5% among active private sector players in the liberalized market. The Group has focused on renewable resources in energy production, aiming to commission 150 MW of hybrid solar power plants by the end of 2024 and gradually introduce 1,000 MW of wind energy projects by the first quarter of 2026 through its subsidiary. Aligning with its goal of achieving a total installed capacity exceeding 5,000 MW in Türkiye, Sabancı Group targets a wind energy portfolio of approximately 1,500 MW.

Decarbonization and Efficiency Solutions

Sabancı Group's sustainability-focused growth strategy in energy and climate technologies extends to its customers as well.

Enerjisa Üretim certifies electricity produced at its renewable plants through the world's most widespread and prestigious voluntary certification programs (IREC, Gold Standard, etc.) via its global energy trading brand, Enerjisa Commodities.

Offering different solution proposals and carbon footprint reduction strategies based on preferences such as lowering carbon footprints arising from electricity consumption or overall activities like production and logistics, Enerjisa Enerji Customer Solutions adds value to its customers.

Enerjisa Enerji Customer Solutions provides sustainable energy services, including distributed generation, decarbonization, and efficiency solutions. It has developed a sustainable, service-based business model through Energy Performance Contracts (EPC). The 4.2 MW solar power installation at Ali Sami Yen Sports Complex by Enerjisa Enerji set a Guinness World Record as the largest rooftop solar capacity installed on a stadium roof.

Sabancı Group's focus on energy and climate technologies encompasses electrification and e-mobility. Its energy performance and retail company, Enerjisa Enerji, owns 100% of Türkiye's first and fastest charging station network, Eşarj. In 2022, Eşarj won the national charging tender by the Ministry of Industry and Technology with 495 fast charging stations.

Sabancı Climate Technologies

In 2022, with the expansion of climate technology investments into the United States, it marked a pivotal moment for Sabancı Group's energy sector. Sabancı Climate Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sabancı Holding, was established in 2022 with the aim of investing in renewable energy, particularly partnering with various venture capital funds and startups in the US and Europe. This new entity aims to leverage Sabancı Group's core competencies in the energy sector in new markets and shape the Group's future portfolio with early-stage climate technologies. Investment areas include fusion, geothermal energy, grid management, ESG software, and carbon accounting, essential segments of the energy value chain. Accordingly, investments have been made in companies such as Commonwealth Fusion, Quaise, Pulsora, Aidash, and others suitable for investment in these areas.

Sabancı Climate Ventures focuses on investing in startups and funds that aim to provide sustainable and clean energy solutions. One of the main objectives of Sabancı Climate Ventures is to ensure that Sabancı's portfolio keeps pace with future innovations in Energy and Climate Technologies, foster access and interaction with the innovation ecosystem, and explore new business model concepts.

Sabancı Renewables Inc., established by Sabancı Climate Technologies to build a renewable energy portfolio in the US, has completed the acquisition of two projects to establish solar power plants totaling 500 MW. In addition to the 272 MW Cutlass II solar power plant, which was commissioned and fully financed in the second quarter of 2024, the construction of Oriana Solar LLC in Texas includes a 232 MW solar power plant and a 60 MW energy storage facility. The Oriana Solar project is targeted to be commissioned in the second quarter of 2025. This development is seen as a significant milestone in the company's growth in the US market. Sabancı Renewables Inc. aims to maintain its investment appetite and build a substantial renewable energy portfolio in the medium term.

Digitalization in Energy

Sabancı Group places data analytics at the core of transforming the energy sector through data-driven energy and demand management, aiming to use energy most efficiently. They are taking steps in the IT/OT domains to actively and accurately balance the use of big data processing and cloud platforms.

Enerjisa Üretim has established the centralized control room SENKRON, which remotely operates and monitors wind, solar, hydroelectric, and thermal energy plants. This digital multi-site management model, a first in the market, helps create uninterrupted energy supply with maximum efficiency and reduces energy costs. The company aims to commercialize its technological expertise and digital services while maintaining its competitive advantage.

Green Hydrogen Production

Enerjisa Üretim has entered into a collaboration protocol within the framework of the "Southern Marmara Hydrogen Coast Platform" project with leading institutions such as TÜBİTAK MAM, Aspilsan, Etimaden, and GMKA for green hydrogen production. The project aims to develop Türkiye's first domestically-produced electrolyzer at MW scale. Additionally, Enerjisa has undertaken Türkiye's first private sector-led green hydrogen production initiative, with green hydrogen produced at the Bandırma Energy Hub being used for generator cooling since July 2022. This pilot project aims to enhance Sabancı Group's competence in green hydrogen and contribute to future projects in this field.

As part of its hydrogen energy efforts, Enerjisa Üretim, along with Sabancı University, is participating as a producer stakeholder in the 16-member consortium led by the Southern Marmara Development Agency under the "HYSouthMarmara Project," selected under the Horizon Europe Clean Hydrogen Partnership 2022 Call. With a budget of 36.8 million Euros over 5 years, this project aims to establish Türkiye's first "Green Hydrogen Valley" and produce 500 tons of green hydrogen annually at various facilities within the Enerjisa Üretim Bandırma Energy Hub.
